HISTORY OF ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENTS

Human beings place their desires ahead of the collective good. They are uncertain, and unstoppable. It is as infinite as sky, with the courage where he doesn’t even shy. With humanity’s desire for economic progress and technological advancements, flagrant urbanization and developments have gradually replaced Earth’s natural landscape with towering skyscrapers and concrete pavements. This resulted in people thinking that the damage to environment is inevitable. Rather, environment can be inevitable, if we all join hands and shield it

Environment includes our being, our surrounding, air, water, and thus, protecting environment has sought to protect the natural world through a number of initiatives, including reducing pollution, conserving natural resources, preventing endangered species and shielding nature from destruction or overdevelopment.

Human concern about environment is a prudence. From the first efforts to conserve the natural resources to beginning protests against air pollution to conservation of animals to endeavor saving forests, environmental activism emerged at various place, at various times, with various aims.

One such outstanding movement is ‘Earth Hour’. It is a global WWF (World Wildlife Fund) climate change initiative, that aims to create awareness of people taking responsibility toward a sustainable future by turning the lights off. Earth Hour started in Sydney, Australia in 2007, which was the success in itself as it saw 2.2 million homes and buildings turn their lights off for an hour to stand their role for climate. It became a global sustainable movement by witnessing 50 million people engaged in it from over 35 countries.

Earth Hour 2019 was one of the phenomenal movement, which took place in Russia. The motto of the event in Russia has been ‘Respond for the Nature!’. Across the country, lighting was switched off in the most famous building like the Moscow Kremlin, the Hermitage Museum, the biggest bridges in Saint Petersburg, the Saint Michael's Cathedral and Kalashnikov Museum in Izhevsk, the Grozny-City Towers. Having crossed the whole planet, Earth Hour is celebrated globally. World famous insights contributed their share by switching their lights off for one hour, which includes The Egyptian pyramids, the London Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Colosseum in Rome, the Sydney Opera House, the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, the Acropolis of Athens, the Empire State Building and the Times Square in New York, the Niagara Falls, Los Angeles International Airport, among many others.

In 2020, however, COVID-19 took hold, countries and cities across the world entered lockdown with the closure of schools, cultural and sports venues and all non-essential businesses. The Earth Hour despite of the challenging times, evolved itself into a new way of this global summit. Taking place virtually, rather than physically, people around globe stayed committed to the event. Rather, the event proved to be bigger than ever with 190 countries and territories taking part and over 4.7 billion global social media impressions. The improbable success of Earth Hour continues to personify the collective desire to create a nature-positive and healthy future.
